WAR DOGS

Throughout history and until this day, we hear stories from soldiers about the loyalty of their dogs. The earliest recorded relationship on the battlefield between a soldier and his dog dates to 490 BC at the Battle of Marathon, where a dog followed his master into battle. And there’s the story of Lysimachus, who was killed during the Battle of Corupedium. His dog guarded his corpse for days from animals and even people. The first seeing-eye dog can be traced to World War 1 because German Shepherds, trained to fight, would lead the injured and blinded soldiers to safety.

A Yorkshire Terrier named Smoky became one of the most recognized war dogs from World War 2. Despite its size, he exhibited the same intelligence as other dogs that Smoky could warn his handlers of impending doom and more. To some, Smoky is known to be the first emotional support dog as he entertained and was a symbol of hope to numerous soldiers. Throughout history, these dogs have shown their unrivaled loyalty to humans. They are more than just pets. They’re an irreplaceable part of our family.
